DaddyBird Goes Bollywood

I'm new to Bollywood, but I'm catching up fast!

My First Bollywood Movie

I usually get a rather disappointed reaction when I tell those that inquire what the first Bollywood movie that I saw was. It’s not one that they expect, nor was it a hit. But still I am very proud to proclaim it, for I think it is a truly great and terrifically entertaining movie; it remains a favorite to this day and I cheerfully will watch it over and over again.

How did it become my first Bollywood movie? I had certainly had other recommendations, not the least of which was, of course, “Sholay”. But at that point I had not yet discovered Al Mansoor Video stores, and even when I eventually did, a copy of “Sholay” and the other recommended titles were not in stock.

Not long after I first saw Amitabh Bachchan on the red carpet at the Dubai International Film Festival, my wife and I were on a plane trip. At the time I wasn’t in the mood to watch any movies on that flight, but naturally many of my neighbors were doing so within my view, and several times I noticed one being watched that had Amitabh in it. It looked rather delightful, with some colorful musical numbers and amusing physical comedy. So even though I didn’t watch it at that time, I looked it up on the in-flight entertainment system to note what it was for future reference. Shortly after that when I happened upon a DVD of the movie I purchased it right away.

I found the movie to be absolutely delightful. Mr. Bachchan certainly lived up to my expectations and exceeded them; the charisma I had witnessed when he was on the red carpet was absolutely there in his screen presence. He was terrific in the comedic scenes, the musical scenes as well as the dramatic. It was very clear why he was a big star!

Now that I have seen many more of his movies- several dozen at least- I know that owning the screen is par for the course with the Big B. He has been doing so for 40 years now, in a multitude of roles. Getting to know his body of work, I have seen him in his most loved roles and his greatest performances, but I still just as much love watching him in the first Bollywood movie I saw.

The movie was “Aladin”, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt and Jacqueline Fernandez.

I have yet to find anyone who likes “Aladin” as much as I do, except perhaps for my wife and my daughter. I have never gotten a very good explanation when someone turns their nose up at it. One person said that the role of Genius was “too easy” for Amitabh, which sounds pretty funny to me. I can see how it could be true, but it doesn’t at all seem like a bad thing to me! So Big B can easily play such a colorful and exuberant character, what’s wrong with that? It certainly is fun watching him do it.

Perhaps it is that “Aladin” is not a typical Bollywood movie. It is a bit “Disney-ish”. That’s not something I would normally apply in a positive way, but here I mean it quite favorably. It does borrow a bit in spirit from Disney’s “Aladdin”, and is basically a fantasy story, presented in live action instead of animation, and quite effectively.

But even though it’s not typical Bollywood fare, and even after becoming much more familiar with Amitabh’s body of work, I think it holds up very well as one of his most enjoyable and endearing performances. So it will be staying on my DVD shelf, right next to many of Mr. Bachchan’s other great performances in movies such as “Sholay”, “Namak Halal”, “Don”, “Baghban”, “Black” and… well it’s a very, very long list, isn’t it?

Why Bollywood?

It’s a question I get quite frequently. How did a thoroughly white American guy get hooked on Bollywood? The answer is almost too obvious. Two words:

Amitabh Bachchan

Of course that doesn’t explain how I became aware of “the Big B” in the first place, does it? It was quite simple, really; I saw him in person. Yeah, there’s a story there.

A couple of years ago, I didn’t really know anything about Bollywood, except for it’s reputation for elaborate musical numbers and maybe glimpses of a few clips on YouTube. But it sounded like something entertaining that aught to be checked out. My wife and I thought we might just go and see one just for fun; we were told by Indian friends that if we did, we should, “just leave your brain at home!” That amused us and didn’t discourage our interest, but we didn’t get around to going and actually seeing one.

Then I was invited, along with a number of other members of the Dubai Twitter community, to participate in the 2009 Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), tweeting about the films and events that were part of the festival. This included an invitation to attend the Red Carpet event on opening night of the festival, which I attended, posting tweets to Twitter and taking lots of pictures

I had heard that a legendary Bollywood star was being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at DIFF that year, so I had heard of Amitabh before that night, but hadn’t had time to learn about his career or even see a picture of him.

So, I didn’t know what he looked like, or much about him, but when he appeared on the red carpet, Amitabh Bachchan still stood out. He didn’t seem to have an entourage with him that night, and yet making his way down the red carpet, Amitabh cut quite a figure. He seemed very comfortable, taking his time making his way down the aisle and stopping frequently to talk with the many members of the media that wanted to chat with him. In spite of my ignorance, somehow I knew that must be him; he just had the bearing and charisma of someone who had earned such an award.

Everyone seemed to want to talk with him, and he seemed happy to oblige them. I didn’t know enough to attempt a conversation with him, and I would have had plenty of competition to get his attention anyway. Of course, looking back on it now, if I had the opportunity to talk with him again in such a circumstance, I wouldn’t let anybody get in my way!  As it was I stood back and let those more in the know get a moment with Big B, and made sure that I got a few good pictures of him.

After the event I took the time to learn more about Amitabh’s career, of course. In the fairly short time I had to observe Mr. Bachchan that night he had made quite an impression, and I greatly looked forward to seeing his movies.

Of course once I did see some of Big B’s movies I was even more impressed. The likability and charisma I saw in him on the red carpet was, naturally, well evident in his screen presence, plus I got to see the breadth of his skill as a multi-talented performer. And watching his movies got me thoroughly hooked on Bollywood in general. Amitabh Bachchan is still tops in my book, but it has been great to find that he is representative of a great body work that is Bollywod in particular and Indian cinema in general.

Thank you Amitabh Bachchan for drawing me in to the world of Bollywood!

So, which was the first of Amitabh Bachchan’s movies that I saw? What was my first Bollywood movie? Probably not what you would think. I’ll post that next!
